Philodendron Bicolor
A striking Colombian and Ecuadorian hemiepiphytic climber whose common name references the dramatic two-toned leaf character that defines the species — the adaxial upper surface a deep, rich, glossy to semi-glossy green, while the abaxial underside is a vivid, saturated copper-red to burgundy-orange that becomes visible with every leaf movement and petiole angle, creating a constant interplay of contrasting colors as the plant grows. The elongated, broadly ovate to lanceolate leaves are carried on long petioles with the climbing, appressed habit typical of the genus, and the copper-red underside coloration is most intense on younger and recently hardened leaves, remaining visible and warm-toned throughout the leaf's lifespan.
- Light: Bright indirect light supports the fastest growth and most vivid two-toned leaf coloration; the copper-red abaxial underside is most saturated on plants grown in good indirect light. Tolerates moderate light but produces smaller, less vividly colored leaves in dimmer conditions.
- Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage and root aeration are essential. Never allow roots to sit in compacted or waterlogged medium.
- Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-82°F; humidity of 60-70% supports the best leaf quality and cleanest emergence. Avoid temperatures below 60°F and cold drafts.
- Watering: Allow the top 1-2" of medium to dry between waterings; water thoroughly and allow to drain completely. Never allow waterlogging — consistent moisture with excellent drainage is the target.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half to full strength every 4 weeks during active growth; a formula with added calcium and magnesium supports the best leaf quality. Reduce feeding frequency in winter.
